In the context of the rapid growth of online services and digital transactions, the activity of cybercriminals is also growing. New deception schemes appear almost every day, and even the most vigilant citizens can fall into the trap. We talk about new fraud schemes and share practical recommendations on how to protect yourself and your money.
1. A loan in your name – without calls and break-ins
One of the most dangerous and new schemes is to apply for loans to an old phone number. Fraudsters buy SIM cards that previously belonged to other people, check if they are still linked to banking applications, and if they have access, they apply for loans using SMS passwords.
What to do?
Before you cancel your old number, be sure to disconnect it from all financial and digital services. Or better yet, turn on the self-lock for making loans. This feature is an additional layer of protection.
2. Real estate manipulation and data substitution
In Kazakhstan, cases have been recorded more than once when information about the ownership of housing or land turned out to be fake – the data in the system could be changed, which created the risk of selling the object without the knowledge of the real owner.
What to do?
• When buying a house or land, carefully study the documents and transparency through official channels.
• Make sure that there are no encumbrances, legal disputes and “registered” tenants.
• Work only with licensed notaries and lawyers.
3. Dangerous phone conversations
Even one careless answer to a call from an unknown number can cost you dearly. Attackers can record your voice and use it to simulate confirmation of transactions, especially if you said “yes” or “no”.
What to do?
• Do not confirm anything with your voice if you are not sure who is in touch.
• Use neutral phrases instead of “yes” and “no”: “I do not confirm”, “I cannot answer”.
• It is better not to engage in dialogue with unfamiliar numbers at all.
