How Can Fraudsters Apply for a Loan without your Knowledge?

Cyberbullying is becoming more sophisticated, and one of the most dangerous schemes is making false loans in someone else’s name. Kazakhstanis are increasingly faced with a situation when they find out about a loan that they have never issued. How does this happen, why do citizens’ data end up in the hands of fraudsters, and most importantly, how to protect yourself?

Hackers steal your data.

One can apply for a loan in someone else’s name in just a few minutes. A minimum set of information is sufficient for this. Copies of identity cards, IINs, and phone numbers are used.

They are obtained in different ways:

  • Fake websites and apps. Users enter personal information at fake websites similar to online banking or public services, unaware that their information is already in the fraudsters’ possession.
  • Accidental leaks. People post photos of themselves when selling a car, renting a home, or filling out questionable questionnaires. This data may end up on the black market.

How is a loan processed?

1. Online loans in MFOs
Many micro-finance organizations issue loans remotely, checking the borrower against an ID photo. Modern technologies allow fraudsters to fake such images or create a fake identity using deepfake.

2. Hacking a mobile number
If fraudsters manage to issue a duplicate SIM card, they gain access to your bank SMS messages and can confirm transactions on your behalf.

How not to become a victim of a false loan:

Never share copies of documents in messengers or social networks.

  • Be careful with online registrations. Do not enter personal information on questionable websites.
  • Enable notifications from the bank and credit bureaus. If they try to apply for a loan in your name, you will immediately find out.
  • Set a ban on loans through egov.kz – this will protect you from loan fraud.
  • Periodically check your credit history through the First Credit Bureau.

What should I do if I have a loan issued?

1. Save all the evidence (SMS, calls, emails, screenshots) and file a police report. In it, describe in detail all the information you know about the loan issued to you.
2. Contact a bank or micro-finance organization with a statement that the loan was fraudulently issued in your name.

Immediate and correct actions on your part will help resolve the current situation.

Take care of yourself and your finances!
