Kazakhstan Has the First Bank Card Made of Recycled Plastic

The partnership project will allow each cardholder to make a measurable contribution to environmental improvement and urban beautification

10 June 2021, Almaty — Eurasian Bank has issued the first eco-card in Kazakhstan together with the Mastercard international payment system. The eco-card, made from recycled plastic, gives everyone the opportunity to support landscaping and garbage sorting in the country.

 

The Bank will direct 0.5% of bonuses from non-cash transactions for the use of an Eco-card to the Eurasian Environmental Fund NPO for the implementation of eco-projects. Additionally, the Bank will add 0.5% bonuses to the customer’s account for contactless payments via Eurasian Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay. You can order the card from 10 June 2021 on the Bank website – eubank.kz.

 

“Green technologies are becoming available to every citizen of Kazakhstan. The more payments made with an Eco-card, the more additional funds are allocated to environmental programs. Together with our project partners and our customers, we are pleased to make a measurable contribution to environmental improvement in Kazakhstan,” said Ivan Belokhvostikov, Deputy Chairman of the Eurasian Bank Management Board.

 

In honor of the launch of the environmental campaign, Eurasian Bank, in partnership with the Eurasian Environmental Fund, Mastercard and the Almaty Green Economy Department, planted an alley of 75 honey lime trees on 5 June.

 

In addition to issuing the Eco-card, the Bank presented a unique NFC product – a poster, through which any bank cardholder can send one or more payments for 500 tenge to the implementation of environmental actions with a single touch. The locations of the NFC posters is are on eef.kz.

 

The Eurasian Environmental Fund will accumulate funds from accrued bonuses from the Eco-cards and donations via NFC posters. The Fund was founded by the AIFC Green Finance Centre Ltd., The Biodiversity Conservation Fund, and the Green Investment Group LLP.

 

“Our mission is to promote Kazakhstan’s carbon neutrality. The Fund intends to raise funds both through grants and through sponsors and voluntary donations. We intend to invest in projects to protect the environment, green cities, restore the Kazakhstan flora and fauna, as well as support public initiatives in the field of ecology,” said Aidar Kazybayev, CEO of the AIFC Green Finance Center.

 

The eco-card is issued in partnership with the Mastercard international payment system.

The Bank is developing online mechanics that will allow customers to see the results of their charity, track the amounts accumulated by the Fund, as well as geolocation of tree plantings, installation of containers for separate garbage collection.

Mastercard became the first payment company to have its emissions reduction goals approved by the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). Eurasian Environmental Fund

 

The Eurasian Environmental Fund non-profiting organization was registered on 13 May this year in the AIFC jurisdiction. The fund founders are the AIFC Green Finance Center, the Kazakhstan Biodiversity Conservation Fund and Green Investment Group LLP.

 

The created Fund aims supporting the implementation of the goals of the Kazakhstan Concept on Transition towards Green Economy, adopted in 2013, and the goals of the Paris Agreement, ratified in 2016.
